Alcohol-related deaths include those deaths which are directly attributable to alcohol, such as alcoholic liver disease and alcohol poisoning, as well as those deaths for which alcohol was a contributing factor. It also includes 'fractions' of those diseases which research has shown alcohol generally plays some part, such as hypertension and heart disease. This rate is different than the 100% attributable causes, which excludes alcohol-related injury deaths.
