Early Child Proficiency & Readiness
Early childhood enrollment and school readiness are important predictors of children's long-term academic, social, and economic success. Early education also acts as an equalizer, bridging vocabulary and resource gaps that may exist between different socio-economic backgrounds before kindergarten even begins. (See Sources/Notes at the bottom of the page for links and more information.)
In public school districts across New Mexico, Early Proficiency Assessments in Literacy and Math are administered with kindergarteners through 2nd graders, aimed at assessing proficiency and readiness for on-grade instruction.
For comparison, across New Mexico, 40.5% of K-2nd graders demonstrate readiness for on-grade instruction in literacy, and 48.6% achieve proficiency (readiness) in math.
Additional county-wide data (below) come from a separate assessment, the Early Development Instrument.
